Unity Might Still Be King…

AUGUST 20TH, 2026

Two points I need to make: #1, it is more based on where you live which programming language and which game engine is truly the “king”. #2, that being said, since Java and C# are king in my area, I think Unity might have a better outlook for me.

Let me set it straight, I barely like Unity. The company makes dubious decisions at random intervals. The engine can feel heavy, even compared to Unreal Engine. And the company has yet to make anything with it similar to UE’s fortnite, unreal tournament, or gears of war.

Even with all that, the community is great (and huge), the amount of resources seem endless (though there is a lot of crap in there), and…after finding a good resource, it can be fun to make things without too much complexity.

Maybe because I’m a game developer, but, after using Unity the past couple of weeks, it feels more accessible than Unreal, and even at times Godot. Things just make sense. You have a GameObject, you put Components on it, you change the properties, and you get them all working in a Game Scene.

Also C# is a beautiful programming language. I grew up on C/C++, and it has been very refreshing coding in C# (so far anyway).

This might be the one I choose for the continuation of my game dev journey. Right now I’m only learning some basic gameplay features and small games, like 2D runners, top downs and 3D marble rolling games (thanks to Unity Unlocked, check out their page, or better yet their Skool course), but I do plan to hopefully take it to Loan Sword$man in the end, once I get some abilities under my belt.

This also works where I live. In Dallas, we do have a gaming scene. We have idSoftware, Bethesda and Gearbox to name a few. But the sheer number of companies in places like Austin and California dwarf Dallas. Fortunately, we also have a big tech sector for enterprise and finance software. A lot of the companies require knowledge of C# or Java (which are essentially the same language, except Java likes to be a little more difficult), so being able to mention I’m making games in C# will probably raise some eyebrows.

I’m also doing some ReactJS and SQL, too, just in case I need to do some web development. I got a pretty good grasp of JavaScript.

My goal: hopefully by this time next month I’ll have a few game designs under my belt in Unity, even if they are smaller ones, that I can share with yall. I’m still getting accustomed to it. It helped spending years on Unreal. I think, since I’m solo, it is better to use Unity. You CAN make solo games in Unreal, but it feels like overkill. If I ever get into a company, maybe, but I really like this solo life, so hopefully I can start designing games that can be used to sustain life.

That’s that with my upate.

Oh! School is back. I signed in 2 days early to take my Calculus I assignments. I’m 12 days ahead of schedule, which will give me some good padding.

And I will be teaching Project Development I and II at my school. Which is always good fun seeing what my students can make as a team.

So that’s that with my update. Thanks for rocking with me. Don’t forget to get it and protect it. See yall next time~!
